      This is the official CalChess State Grade Level Championship for all levels/ratings.
      Sections are based on grades. There are no play-ups.

      Note: If your child is in: Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, or 3, they will play on Saturday only.
      If your child is in: Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, or 12, they will play on both Saturday AND Sunday.


      The side event is for players who:
      1. Want to play Sunday only (rating must be under 800)
      2. Are in Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, or 3, and want to play on both days
      (rating must be under 800)

    November 2019 Supplement ratings will be assigned to players

    Every player can request up to two 1/2point byes.
    All byes must be requested before the start of the Round 1.

    Entry Fee:
    Grade 4-12 (2-day tournament) entry fee: $62
    Grade K-3 & JV (1-day tournament) entry fee: $49
    Blitz: $15
    CalChess membership: $5 - required
    USCF membership required

    After 11/9 until 11/13: +$20
    After 11/13 & onsite: +$40

    No play-up to higher grade!

    Refund/Cancel fee: $20

    Change Fee:
    Before 11/10: $5
    11/10 & onwards: $10

    ONLINE REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE ON 11/15 at 5PM

  • Rules & Regulations and New to Tournaments?

    Rules and Regulations regarding CalChess State Championships

    Per the CalChess scholastic regulations, players will be allowed to compete for both a School Team and a Club Team.
    This means that a player's score will count both into the School Team and the Club Team.

    To form a School Team: minimum 2 students enrolled as a full time sudents at the same school. No combined schools allowed.
    Top 3 player's score count in the Grade Level Championship.

    To form a Club Team: minimum 2 players must be the member of the same chess club.
    Top 3 player's score counts.
    Club member requirements: club members must attend at least 6 regularly scheduled classes with a particular scholastic chess program over a period of at least 3 months immediately preceeding the tournament.

    This tournament will follow the Swiss Tournament rules, and will be rated by USCF.
